Client questions

Practical questions, carefully explained.

These editorial Q&As present general Swedish-law information in a natural client-and-jurist format. They are not verbatim interview transcripts and are not advice for any individual matter. Simon’s core point is simple: Swedish-American inheritance work depends heavily on the specific documents, people, banks, assets, and jurisdictions involved.

Swedish terms in plain English

Three concepts that often appear early in a Swedish estate.

Bouppteckning

A Swedish estate inventory records the estate’s interested parties, assets, and debts. It is generally registered with the Swedish Tax Agency and serves a different function from a U.S. probate proceeding.

Arvskifte

An estate distribution agreement sets out how heirs divide the estate. In Sweden it is a private-law document rather than a document routinely registered with an authority.

Boutredningsman

A Swedish court may appoint an estate administrator to represent and administer an estate. This can be relevant when heirs cannot jointly move the administration forward.

Use official sources for current procedures

For current forms and general administrative guidance, consult the Swedish Tax Agency’s estate-inventory information. Government guidance cannot determine what your particular matter requires.
